Education
  • Ph.D. (1981) in Agronomy at Iowa State University
  • M.S. (1978) in Agronomy at the University of Minnesota
  • B.S. (1974) in Agronomy at the University of Minnesota
Professional Background
  • He has been at the University of Arkansas since 1984
  • He spent two years in the Peace Corps in Morocco working on forage production for dairy herds
  • Dr. West then spent two years on a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Ruakura Agricultural Research Centre in Hamilton, New Zealand, where he researched nitrogen dynamics in white clover-ryegrass pastures
  • Dr. West spent 6 months on a sabbatical leave in 2005 in Montpellier, France, with the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique doing research on drought tolerance of tall fescue.
Courses Taught
Research Emphasis
  • Water relations of tall fescue with it symbiotic fungal endophyte with emphasis on elucidating the physiological and genetic mechanisms explaining the endophyte enhancement of host drought tolerance.
  • Growth, adaptation, and nutrient use of grasses (e.g. switchgrass) for biofuel production.
Program Area

Physiology, ecology, and production of biomass and forage crops.

Activities

Co-advisor of undergraduate CSES Club. Supervise environmental restoration projects.

Honors and Awards

Fulbright Research Scholarship. 2005. Franco-American Commission for Educational Exchange.
