Education
  • Ph.D. in Soil Science in 1972 from University of Wisconsin at Madison
  • M.S. in Horticulture in 1966 from University of Wisconsin at Madison
  • B.S. in Agronomy in 1963 from Texas A & M University
    Professional Background
    • From 1966 to 1968, Dr. Daniel taught soil science and chemistry at the School of Agriculture in Ibadan, Nigeria
    • He moved to the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1968, and was promoted to full professor in 1984
    • He transferred to the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1989. He is currently the Board Representative for division S-6 (Soil and Water Conservation) of the Soil Science Society of America
    Courses Taught
    • ENSC 3263 Environmental Soil and Water Conservation (Sp).
Topics covered include: effects of land use on water quality, major sources of agricultural nonpoint pollution, and types of pollutants transported in runoff and to the ground water. Students will also become familiar with best management practices and resource management tools (models) used to minimize water quality impacts. Recitation two hours per week and laboratory three hours per week. Prerequisite AGRN 2203.
    Research Emphasis

Dr. Daniel's area of specialization is water quality, runoff, agricultural nonpoint pollution and eutrophication with special emphasis on phosphorus.

    • He conducts research to examine the impacts of agricultural practices on surface and ground water.
    • He develops and evaluates management practices to minimize water quality impacts.
    • Recent research has examined constituents levels and losses in runoff from pastures receiving poultry manure (nutrients and pesticides), poultry litter (nutrients and estrogen), swine manure (nutrients), or commercial fertilizer (nutrients), and phosphorus levels in runoff from soils high in phosphorus.
    • Other research has examined the effectiveness of grassed filter strips, aluminum sulfate amendments, drying times, and incorporation for minimizing the transport of animal waste constituents in runoff.
    • Current research is focusing on understanding the relationship between the level of phosphorus in the soil and that contained in the runoff, especially as it relates to eutrophication.
