MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS – GRANT RELATED
During the past 10 years, I have provided statewide leadership for Extension Education programs in the following areas: 1) Nutrient Management for Livestock Operations, 2) Watershed / Water Quality Education for Agricultural Producers, and 3) Spatial Technology Applications for Agriculture and Natural Resource Management. The following are major accomplishments:
# Served as PI of 8 federally funded grant projects totaling over $2 million dollars from the EPA 319h and the USDA-CSREES 406 program including 1 nutrient management grant, 5 watershed education grants, and 2 regional water quality / watershed management grants. Highlights include:
• These grants have provided educational opportunities to over 5000 livestock producers and over 1000 row crop farmers.
• Led a multi-agency effort to develop training programs and curriculum for the State of Arkansas’ Nutrient Management Planner and Nutrient Applicator Certification training Program. The training manuals have been adopted by two State agencies as the nutrient management planning and application protocol for livestock operations in the State of Arkansas. All new nutrient management plans (over 2000 written) developed after 2005 in Arkansas now follow this protocol. To date, we have trained over 2500 nutrient applicators and over 140 nutrient management planners. The training effort has been so successful that Extension has been able to leverage 2/3 funding from ADEQ and ANRC for a Nutrient Management Training coordinator that will be an Extension employee
• As part of two regional water quality grants, I have served as Extension’s Water Quality Coordinator on the Southern Region Extension Water Quality Committee with twelve other Southern States including 1890 institutions. Elected and served as Chair of the Committee, where I developed and implemented an Awards program to recognize Extension personnel across the Southern United States for their contributions towards water quality education.
• Have been able to fund over 25 Extension employees to attend the bi-annual regional water quality conference in Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky and New Mexico where over 30 posters and 15 oral presentations have been made by Extension Employees.
• Served as PI on 5 watershed education grants including: Ballard Creek in Washington County; Lower Little River Watershed in Sevier, Little River, Hempstead, and Howard Counties; Bayou Bartholomew I and II in Jefferson, Lincoln, Desha, Ashley, and Drew Counties; West Fork of the White River in Washington and Madison County. I worked with County Agents in these counties to locally deliver educational opportunities to agricultural producers on how to reduce nonpoint source pollution via Best Management Practices from their operations.
# Served as Co-PI of 3 federally funded grant projects totaling over $900,000 from the USDA-CSREES 406 program including nutrient management and water quality education as well as spatial technology applications in crop production. Highlights from these grants included:
• The development of “Soil Testing for Manure Management” program (slide set, fact sheet – 7500 distributed) which was delivered in a series of meetings across poultry producing areas to over 1500 livestock producers
• Development and delivery of a 6-hour lecture series on nutrient management planning for a graduate level special topics course delivered through the U of A Poultry Center for Excellence and via Compressed interactive video statewide
• Field study that looked at how well our soil sampling recommendations accounted for spatial variability of soil phosphorus in fields receiving poultry litter over a various number of years (results published in the Journal of Environmental Quality, a peer reviewed research journal).
• Field case-study on the affects of land leveling on row crop fields with high salinity / sodium levels in subsoil. Resulted in peer-reviewed journal article in Soil and Water Conservation.
• Field study that compared conventional and variable rate fertilizer recommendations for P, K, and lime for grain (soybean, wheat, rice) production in 30 producer fields that were grid sampled.
